Review: Two Ruby Knockers, One Jaded Dick: a Dirk Darrow Investigation

Meaghan Flaherty

Featuring Dirk Darrow, a jaded private investigator played by Tim Motley, 2 Ruby Knockers, 1 Jaded Dick: A Dirk Darrow Investigation, is the pun-iest theatrical magic show you will ever see. This was an hour of non-stop laughing, though sometimes they were groans from the cheap yet still hilarious jokes.

We meet Dirk as he stumbles upon a big case at the same time as a beautiful woman shrouded in mystery. He then takes us into the investigation, leading to much audience participation in the various magic tricks that progress us to the eventual end of the show. The magic is quite impressive, and still very, very funny. The way Motley interacts with the audience is a fantastic asset to this type of show, as it is extremely inviting and inclusive.

The humour is relentless with the puns and jokes at the expense of the audience and of Motley himself. A favourite moment of mine is when he breaks the fourth wall to make fun of the venue, as it was a church and the humour is quite lewd. All of the little things from his earlier magic tricks come together in the final event for a big reveal that is very satisfying.

I really enjoyed this show, and huge props to Motley for his “old-time American detective” accent. You would have no idea that he’s Australian;I suppose playing a dick just comes naturally. Check it out while you still can!
